Wine Exports worrying drop

Exports of wine to China fell to all of Australia’s biggest customers in the 12 months to September.

The latest Wine Australia figures show that total export volumes dropped by 17 per cent in 2016.

Exports to China have fallen 76 per cent in the year to November due to the retaliatory tariffs imposed by the government.

While it was expected that the drop in passenger traffic would happen, it is concerning to note that the decline in volume to other destinations.

These other markets including United States, Germany and the UK were targeted at potential solutions to the China issue.

The drop in sales to Canada and the US has raised concerns about the strength of the Australian dollar.

Only the UK’s exports increased in value in Q3 2016, as volumes slipped.

The UK has overtaken China as Australia’s largest wine export market. It is the first time that the UK has surpassed China in terms of volume.

The overall decline in sales reflects the challenges the industry has faced over the past year.

Exports declined in September and October due to a drop in demand in the UK and Europe, which was partly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Developing new export markets is a key strategy for the wine industry.

The latest figures from Wine Australia show that the value of the wine produced in the Barossa, Clare Valley, and McLaren Vale regions has significantly decreased.

The company is currently exporting to over a dozen countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Japan. It has also secured a major deal to ship cases to the US.
